This vast picturesque lake, 900 metres above sea-level, is one of the main
tourist attractions in Myanmar. The lake, 22 km long and 10 km across, has
a population of some 150,000, many of whom live on floating islands of
vegetation. Inlay Lake, natural and unpolluted, is famous for its scenic
beauty and the unique leg-rowing of the Inthas, the native lake dwellers.

It is one of the most revered Buddhist shrine in Myanmar. Bagan monarch
Alaung Sithu of A.D 12th Century cherishes five images, dedicated to five
Buddhas of this planet Earth, here. Taking Phaung Daw Oo as the landmark.
The great lake could be toured around.

One of the small villages of Inlay Lake located on the western bank of the
lake. A Buddha image has enshrined at a whitewashed stupa, which is on the
summit of a hill. Below the stupa around the hill are cluster of hundreds
of ancient stupas most are ruins overgrown with bushes.

A wooden monastery built on stilts of the lake, 4 years before th
construction of Mandalay Palace. It’s known as the Jumping Cat Monastery
the monks there have trained their cats to jump and leap though small
hoops.

AROUND INLAY
Kakku is about 33 miles from Taunggyi. One of the Asia’a largest and most
spectacular ancient monuments is a wonderful Pagoda named Kakku. It
contains over 2,000 stupas with originsdating back many centuries.

Over 1430 metres above sea-level, is the capital of Shan State. It is a
hill station, cool and pleasant all the year round. The market, on every
fifth day, is crowded with ethnic minorities in their traditional dresses.

Kalaw is another hill station, located 1,400 metres above sea-level. Many
of the Tudor-style houses and English gardens of colonial days remain.
Kalaw is situated 70 km west of Taunggyi.

About 45 km drive from Kalaw is Pindaya, well known for its extensive
limestone caves. The caves are set deep in the hillsides and there stands
at the entrance, a 15 metre high Shwe U Min Pagoda. There are some 6000
Buddha images and interesting stalagmites.
